5. Funding: Strategic Growth Council Urban Greening Project (June 17) and Urban Greening Planning (July 1) grants

Please find attached the Solicitation Notice for the Urban Greening for Sustainable Communities grant program.  This program is administered by the California Natural Resources Agency on behalf of the Strategic Growth Council.  To learn more about this program and the Strategic Growth Council, visit: www.sgc.ca.gov

In this second of three funding cycles, there is $20 million available for Urban Greening Grants.  Up to 25% of that amount can be used to fund urban greening planning grants, with the balance funding urban greening projects.  You will find detailed information regarding program requirements including eligibility, evaluation and scoring criteria in the guidelines posted on the website at: http://resources.ca.gov/bonds_prop84_urbangreening.html

Staff is available to provide assistance as you prepare concepts for urban greening project grants and full applications for urban greening planning grants. Contact information is provided below and on the attached Solicitation Notice.

Please note that the guidelines and the Concept Proposal Form were updated to reflect the Council’s decision to adopt consideration of the risks of Sea Level Rise in the review process.  Make sure you use the latest version.

6. Funding – EPA Environmental Education Grant applications due May 2
Education gets to the heart of the matter – working with community members and leaders to understand the benefits that investing in urban greening brings to our communities. The Environmental Protection Agency offers grants to help people make informed decisions about the environment. This could be a great resource for your organization!

Applications are due May 2. Additional information is available here:
http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/grants.html

7. Get ready for the California Urban Wood Conference! May 19-21, San Francisco
Golden Gate Club, Presidio of San Francisco

Urban trees shade our hot streets, sequester carbon dioxide, and more! But what should we do with them when they need to be removed? Mulch and biofuel sends all of that carbon straight back into the atmosphere. This conference explores the creative and positive uses of urban wood that continue to store carbon and add beauty to our everyday life!

This conference features a fantastic collection of speakers from across the nation who represent some of the top leaders in urban wood utilization. Learn lessons from their extensive experience to bring about the change you would like to make in your own community.

Please take a look at the conference website and look closely at the great list of speakers.

10. Society of American Foresters event in Pasadena

The San Gabriel Chapter Society of American Foresters together with Humboldt Alumni invite you for a reception followed by a screening of National Geographic Channel’s documentary Climbing Redwood Giants. The film is an exploration of redwoods featuring the research of Humboldt State University Professor Steve Sillett, the Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology, and chronicles the adventures of world renowned National Geographic explorer Michael Fay.

Sillett and his students changed the way scientists looked at redwood forests when they began climbing the trees and discovering crowns supporting a rich community of life. He studies all aspects of redwood forest canopy ecology, including epiphytes, tree physiology, canopy microclimates and wildlife.

The event is free and includes a reception with light refreshments. Register by May 10 as there is limited seating. Refer to the contacts below for additional information. Click here to access the Humboldt Alumni RSVP form.
